WHAT ARE THE 3 MEANINGS OF LAY USED IN WIRE ROPE TERMINOLOGY?

  1. Lay Direction
    • This refers to the direction in which the strands are twisted around the core and how the wires are twisted within each strand.
      • Right Lay (Z-lay): Strands wrap around the core in a clockwise direction.
      • Left Lay (S-lay): Strands wrap in a counterclockwise direction.
  2. Type of Lay
    • This describes the relationship between the direction of the wires in the strands and the strands around the core:
      • Regular Lay: The wires in the strand are twisted in the opposite direction to the strands around the core.
        • More stable
        • Resists rotation and crushing
        • Common for slings and hoisting
      • Lang Lay: The wires in the strand are twisted in the same direction as the strands around the core.
        • More flexible
        • Better abrasion resistance
        • More prone to untwisting under load

    • This refers to the linear distance along the rope in which one strand makes a complete revolution around the rope’s core.
